Resurrection: Newness of Life

Romans 6: 1-5

1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

We receive newness of life because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. When we are baptized, we receive the Holy Spirit. Through the power of His resurrection, we walk in newness of life. Sin brings death but His Spirit brings life.

Romans 8:10, 11

10 But if Christ is in you, although your bodies are dead because of sin, your spirits are alive because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit which dwells in you.

We receive the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead! His resurrection power dwells on the inside of us and infuses us with His power to live! This is amazing. Daily we live our baptismal promise of denying ourselves, dying to ourselves and taking up the cross.[1] We are buried with Him in baptism, and we rise again in new life. We receive His Spirit to walk in this life. At baptism, we are born again, and our old life passes away and we have new life in Him. We are new creatures![2] His resurrection defeated death! His power defeats death in our lives. We die to ourselves so that we can live for Him.

We need His Holy Spirit to live for Him. To what end do we receive the Holy Spirit?

Romans 8:29

29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the first-born among many brethren.

The end goal of receiving His Spirit is being conformed into His image! Sharing in His divine nature.[3] Simply put, we need His power to live a Godly, holy life. We need the Holy Spirit to live holy. Who would have thunk? He infuses us with His power, the very same power that raised Christ from the dead! We cannot make ourselves holy, we need His Spirit.

Thank Him for His Holy Spirit. If you have not been baptized, what are you waiting for? Christ has new life available for you.

Live repentance. Be zealous. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen
